Pewsey success for RRR’s: Two Romsey Road Runners competed in the Pewsey Vale Half Marathon on 24 August, which took place on country roads just south of Marlborough. The undulating, circular route passed through scenic countryside, taking in one of the famous white horses, before finishing back at the village’s primary school. Brenda Topliss, who finished 96th overall in a time of 1:56:02, won the FV65 category and received a trophy when awards were presented after the race; Di Cross finished just ahead in 1:55:33 (91st, 20th woman); both runners used the event as part of their training for the Clarendon trail races in early October. The race was well organised, expertly marshalled and very friendly.
A further contingent of Romsey Road Runners travelled westwards to Corfe Castle in Dorset to run part of the notorious ‘Beast’ route just for fun! This annual club trip to Corfe is affectionately referred to as the Beast ‘recce’. The Romsey runners run about 9 miles of the race route, which can be confirmed as being accurately described as undulating and extremely hilly! Part of the course includes the formidable Houns-tout cliff where the runners climb around 200 steps to the top and experience breathtaking views across the Purbeck coastline; before finally returning along the cliff top and back to Corfe Common.
The final RR10 of the summer took place in Hursley last night. Well done to every RRR who ran an RR10 this year. The event continues to be very popular.

The RR10 website has published a list of the total number of RR10s completed since 1995. Our very own Penny Jennings is top of the table with an impressive 161 runs completed since 1995! 162nd run tonight Penny?
The list is here. http://www.rr10.hampshire.org.uk/rrover.html
Wendy Couper took part in the Adventure Boot Camp Farnborough Charity 5K event on 6th July. This was Farnborough’s inaugural charity run is in aid of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. The route took runners through grass and wooded areas of the in Rushmoor Arena, Aldershot. It was both interesting and achievable for beginners, whilst still enough of a challenge to tax experienced runners looking for a race. Wendy finished 1st Female V70 in a time of 37:20.
RRR Tam Ryan completed the Dorney Dash 10km race on Saturday 26th July. This is a fast flat course consisting of a series of laps around the Olympic Eton Dorney Lake, making it ideal for PBs. However, the weather proved far too hot and several runners pulled out after a few miles and a number of ambulances had to be called. Tam was unaffected and finished in 43:25 and second her age category.
Four RRRs ran at the Lakeside 5k in Hillsea on the 30th July. This was race 4 of a 5 race series, previously known as the Promenade 5k. The route is fast and flat, ideal for fast times. RRR finishers: Jade Rolfe 20:29; Tam Ryan 20:34; John Quayle 21:29; Di Cross 24:23.
The 3rd August saw a number of Romsey Runners, broaden their experiences and take part in the Wellington Triathlon, in Crowthorne, Berkshire. The triathlon includes a swim, cycle and run. Taking part in the ‘Super Sprint’ event was Wendy Couper, in her 10th year of competing is this popular event. Wendy completed the 200m swim/12m cycle/5km run – in a total time of 1:43:16 – placing her 1st in the V60 age category.
RRR were at the Romsey Sports Fair today. The “Can you beat a Romsey Road Runner?” competition was very popular with the kids.
Participants were asked to do 50m shuttles over a minute to see how far they could run. Well done to Marcus (surname not known) who managed 320m!
Many thanks to all that volunteered at the stall today.
We don’t normally post parkrun results but we thought it worth mentioning that RRR were represented at four different parkruns this weekend. Results as follows:
Runner | parkrun | Time |
Daniel Lurcock | Maidstone | 00:21:20 |
Lee Harris | Eastleigh | 00:21:27 |
John Quayle | Southampton | 00:21:53 |
Chris Stocks | Conkers | 00:21:54 |
Alison Solomon | Eastleigh | 00:30:03 |
Linda Webb | Eastleigh | 00:32:57 |
Wendy Couper | Eastleigh | 00:35:51 |
Five Romsey ladies took part in the Three Peaks Challenge as part of ‘Team Nikki’, raising money for Brain Tumour Research in memory of Nikki Lewis.
Sarah White, Nikki’s cousin and her fellow team mates Hannah, Becky, Alice and Michelle – all ladies from Romsey Runners – were ‘Team Nikki’.
The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland, usually within 24 hours. The three peaks are: Snowdon, in Wales (1085m) Scafell Pike, in England (978m) and Ben Nevis, in Scotland (1344m).
Starting at Ben Nevis ‘Team Nikki’ rose to the challenge taking on the peaks one by one, encouraging one another; “We are very pleased to report that we completed the challenge in 23 hours 50 minutes and the fundraising total is heading towards £2,500 or more which is fantastic and well worth the exhaustion, aches and pains! We were very lucky to have great weather all weekend and were treated to 3 out of 3 views which kept our spirits high!”
On a more local note, RRR were out in the New Forest on 12th July, taking in the scenic sights offered by the New Forest 10. The weather was warm and the route pleasant taking runners along gravel tracks and through open forest in a loop starting and finishing at New Park near Brockenhurst. The results were Neil Jennings, 1:07:58 (PB); Daniel Lurcock, 1:18:58 (1st ever 10 mile race); Penny Jennings, 1:24:31; Brenda Topliss, 1:30:15 (1st in age category); Di Cross, 1:32:22 and Charlotte Maslen, 1:43:59.
The annual Wyvern 10k in Fair Oak also took place on 12th July. Now organised by Hedge End running club, the Wyvern 10k was established as an Olympic Legacy Event in 2012 and is aimed at promoting running at a local level; the out and back road run is proving popular. RRR finishers were Wayne Windebank, 43:12 and John Quayle, 46:55. Former GB Olympic 400m runner and local man, Iwan Thomas also ran and came in at 44:33.
It’s Romsey Sports Fair on 27th July and RRR will be there!
During Thursday’s track session we will be measuring how far people can run in one minute. This is so that we can run a “beat a Romsey Road Runner” competition during the Sports Fair where people will be invited to run as far as they can up and down a 100m track for one minute and then compare their distance against existing members. The main point is to show that RRR is for all runners and there is a place in the club for everyone who likes to run. All participants will enter a free prize draw.
Amanda Hull is looking for people who can help out at the Romsey Sports Centre from either 11:00-13:00 or 13:00-17:00. If you can help please email Amanda at [email protected] before 20th July.
Tam Ryan completed the South Downs Marathon on Saturday 21 June. This is becoming a popular trail event and offers some challenging inclines for runners, including a start up Butser Hill. The longer views are rewarding and the scenery along the route pleasant. Despite taking a wrong turn along the way, making the trail longer than it need to be and the added scorching sunshine, Tam still managed a time of 3:43:17 finishing as 2nd lady and 15th overall out of field 412 runners.
Lynda Brown did the South Downs Half Marathon, which turned out to be just under 15 miles by the end, after organisers extended the route to avoid another event. Lynda’s time was 2:22:51 finishing as 15th lady and 84th out of 280.
There was a good turn out of runners to the annual Mile of Miles relay event on 2nd July, hosted by Southampton Athletics Club. The relay event took place on Southampton’s athletics track, the perfect setting for each runner to complete a metric mile (4x400m). We look forward to welcoming all our Beer Race participants to Braishfield tomorrow morning. Due to recent wet weather, our usual car parking field in Dummers Road is out of bounds, however we are very grateful to be given permission to use another field in the village on Braishfield Road, just along from the village hall. Please look out for signage and our marshals who will help you to park.
If you need to collect your race number, please park in the car park field and then walk back to the village hall. Please note that the village hall is a 10 minute walk to the start. If you already have your race number, please park in the car park field and walk round to the start on Dummers Road, approximately 5 minutes away.
On 21st May, 28 RRR took place in the third RR10 of the season. The Men fielded two teams finishing 4th and 14th while the Women fielded four teams finishing 6th, 13th, 25th and 37th.

Becky Tovey and Tam Ryan ran in the warm sunshine to complete the Hook 10 road race. A flat road race, which was well organised took runners through lanes in and around the village of Hook, North Hampshire. Tam finished 5th lady in 1:12:40 and Becky came in as 15th lady in 1:18:22.
The pair, on a roll, took part in the Windlesham Pairs 10km Relay. Organised by Windle Valley runners, a mass of 186 runners competed in this inaugural event. Teams – male, female or mixed, young and slightly older – took it in turns to complete a 1km undulating loop until the 10km distance had been completed. Team Ryan and Tovey were the 3rd ladies home in a time of 41:13 and 37th overall out of 93 teams. Nearly non-stop saxophone music provided runners with inspiration whilst tea, coffee and cakes at the finish rounded off a pleasant evening.
In May, RRR Duncan Walling took part in the Ox Ultra Marathon in Wiltshire, organised by White Star Running. Advertised as one of the UK’s toughest and longest marathons, it included a hilly off road route through King John’s royal hunting ground of Cranborne Chase. In his first ever Ultra, Walling finished the 37.6 miles in a time of 7:55:05; 35th out of a total of 75 finishers. Afterwards Walling said, ‘It was my first marathon let alone my first ultra and, with hindsight, was perhaps a bit far as I’m still a little stiff. But it was great fun, an amazing location and weather.’
Beer Race Numbers will be sent out this week. If there are any queries, please contact us at [email protected].
Don’t forget that you can still enter on the day.
The second evening RR10 took place on Wednesday 7th May at Stoney Cross, in the New Forest. Romsey Runners were well represented. The route started as a pleasant downhill with runners setting off at a fast pace before encountering mud and water at the bottom and a returning incline back towards the start!
The Romsey Men consisted of three teams finishing 4th, 8th and 26th. The B team were actually the “second of the B teams” and were ahead of the A teams of some other clubs which is a tremendous performance.
The Romsey Women went one better than last time out to field five teams finishing 7th, 14th, 18th, 32nd & 44th respectively.
Male finishers: 2nd Matt Hammerton, 24th Mark Stileman, 26th Chris Brown, 27th Tony Burrows, 31st Andrew Proctor, 33rd Ian Ralph, 39th Jimmy Hunt, 44th Neil Jennings, 47th Duncan Dickinson, 62nd Tony King, 90th Steve Reed, 127th Peter Hartley, 130th John Quayle, 141st Andrew Archibald, 188th Richard Vie, 198th David Nixon and 200th Derek Kelly.
Women finishers: 13th Tam Ryan, 24th Becky Tovey, 28th Hannah Hunt, 31st Rebecca Mariner, 37th Jo Weguelin, 46th Penny Jennings, 52nd Alice Lane, 55th Julia Abab, 58th Di Cross, 80th Liz Slade, 104th Naomi Farrington, 106th Anna Duignan, 125th Linda Webb, 128th Deborah Rees, 134th Julie Shanker and 147th Wendy Couper.
The weekend saw 9 RRRs running in the Harewood Forest 10K, starting and finishing at Wherwell, in the heart of the Test Valley. Cool, windy conditions with only a small amount of mud, made for a very pleasant race off-road event with lots of beautiful scenery including some patches of Bluebells still at their peak!

The first RR10 of the 2014 season started at Royal Victoria Country in Netley last Wednesday. There was a high turn out from Romsey Runners, who were presented with new route around the park, which provided plenty of mud. Romsey finishers were:
Men: 5th Matt Hammerton, 20th Toby Burrows, 21st Jimmy Hunt, 26th Mark Stileman, 29th Andrew Proctor, 40th Ian Ralph, 41st Duncan Dickenson, 48th Christopher Brown, 74th Tony King, 84th Nick Berryman, 103rd Duncan Walling, 165th John Quayle, 187th Stuart Cripps, 189th Andrew Archibald, 254th Derek Kelly, and in 259th Greg Roulston.

The Romsey Men fielded three teams finishing 4th, 12th and 27th. All the A team finished in Top 30 while the B Team all finished in the Top 90. The Romsey Women managed to field four teams finishing 12th, 18th, 30th & 49th respectively.
A very wet Sunday saw the annual Houghton Trail Event; a selection of runs and cycle events starting from the village hall with all proceeds raised going towards the Houghton All Saints Church. There was a choice of 4k fun run, a 11k trail run, a 5k off road cycle and 14 or 32k mountain bike ride. The route was essentially off road using parts of the Test and Clarendon Way, trails and paths and some quiet rural roads.
RRR, Di Cross said afterwards, “The Houghton 11k trail run was great fun as ever, despite the deluge.”
A friendly event, introduced by Dickie Davies, it was well run with plenty of marshalls and delicious cake at the end. The course was muddy and slippery – probably worse for the cyclists than runners – with some good hills along the way.
Di finished in 1:01:38 – a minute off her PB for the course and but still finished first in her age category. Other finishers: Tony Burrows 44:45 (3rd man), Jimmy Hunt 45:07(5th man), Hannah Hunt 56:43 (3rd lady), Stuart Cripps 58:34, Tony Peelo 1:00:03, Di Cross 1:01:38, Penny Jennings 1:02:11, Alice Lane 1:03:14, Sarah White 1:05:37, Liz Slade 1:07:45, Anna Duignan 1:13:29, Naomi Farrington 1:14:59 and David Nixon 1:16:13.
The 32k cycle event saw RRR Wendy Couper, first in her age category finishing in 2:55:33.
This is a new walk, but one with a number of familiar features
Starting at the quarry car park above Kimmeridge (GR 918800) we will descend towards Kimmeridge Bay where we will turn west on the coast path into the Lulworth Ranges, past the Nodding Donkey (oil well) and out towards Broad Bench.
We ascend a hill (easy at first, gets steep!) to a bench where we will have our coffee break. We go along Gad Cliff and descend to Worbarrow Bay. Before us is the steep ascent to Rings Hill Iron Age hillfort on Flower Barrow where we will have our lunch break.
After our stop we turn east and take a familiar path along then down to Tyneham where, if time and/or inclination allows, we may make a short stop. We ascend to Gad Cliff where our path remains high as we walk along the ridge back to the quarry car park.
Distance: 9 miles. 3 good hills.
Bring refreshments for the lunch break.
Most of you know the quarry car park above Kimmeridge. If you are unsure, contact me for more details – e-mail: [email protected].

Romsey Road Runners gathered en masse to eat pasta and to wish this years participants in the London Marathon the very best of luck.
Over 50 club members gathered at the Sun Inn for copious amounts of pasta on Tuesday evening to assist fellow runners in ‘carb’ loading in preparation for Sundays London Marathon.
Six RRR will be taking part; some seasoned vets, others for the first time; all looked in great shape and were well prepared. We wish them well and hope they have a good run on the day.
David Nixon once again provided the cleverly thought out questions to the Pasta Party Quiz which was won by the (brilliant) Fuzzy Duck team.
