Sunday 14th July saw the New Forest 10 Mile Road and Forest Track Race take place, organised by New Forest Runners. The race started and finished from New Park Farm, Brockenhurst. The route is very nearly all off-road, using gravel tracks and paths within the National Park. It is essentially flat, but can get warm within the shelter of the enclosures, little breeze getting through to cool the runners. There were 4 events, 3 children’s races and the main 10 miler.
Five Romsey Road Runners participated in the 10 mile route. First man home was Neil Jennings in 1:16:08 and Penny Jennings made it a family affair, finishing as first Romsey lady to finish in a time of 1:23:10.
Christopher Stocks finished in 1:21:11, followed by Anna Duignan in 1:58:59 and Alison Soloman in 1.58.59.
There were a total of 775 finishers, enjoying the fine sunny weather, a sharp contrast to last year’s event which was cancelled due to the heavy rains and flooding of parts of the route. What a difference a year makes!
Wednesday 3 July saw a bumper number of teams turn out from local running clubs to take part in the annual Mile of Miles relay event. Hosted by the 2012 winners Romsey Road Runners, the relay event took place on Southampton’s athletics track, the perfect setting for runners to complete a metric mile (4x400m) before handing on to the next runner in the team.
26 teams took part in the event, including three from new club Hedge End Running Club, and three from New Forest Runners Juniors section who gave all the senior teams something to worry about, finishing 8th, 14th and 15th overall.
Southampton Athletic Club’s A team won the event comfortably in a total time of 49:15, almost 4 minutes ahead of their B team who placed 2nd, and will host the event in 2014.

20 Romsey Road Runners and partners headed to Plymouth over late May Bank Holiday for the club’s annual weekend away, which coincided with the final event in Endurance Life’s Coastal Trail Series.
Members competed in the 10k and half marathon races, which were held at the private Flete Estate in South Devon near Ivybridge. On a glorious day with a cool breeze, the half-marathon course followed the spectacular Erme Estuary and took the field through woodland awash with wild garlic and flowers, along the clifftops and fields before finishing by wading through the estuary (fortunately at low tide) before a 1.5 mile climb to the finish.
